Jaden is not the only one of his family who expresses himself without the burden of gender roles. He proudly expresses himself in clothes that society says is made for women. The 17-year old been seen wearing “women’s clothing” all over Los Angeles and does not care what anyone has to say about his wardrobe. Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, has practiced gender neutrality and has confirmed that he will be modeling women’s clothing in the upcoming Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2016 fashion show. This is called gender neutrality and is now being appropriated more by citizens of the United States. It’s been a gateway for children to express themselves in a way which would’ve impossible any sooner.īut what if you aren’t gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender? What if you are a man who just enjoys wearing women’s clothing? What if you refuse to live in the box society has placed you in? People like Jaden Smith or even the rapper Young Thug have both decided to ignore the stigma society has placed on their gender and the people around them by wearing women’s clothing. With this and the gay rights movement, 2015 has created a pathway of all sorts of people to be who they really are or to transition publicly into the person they truly want to be. But how is this possible?Ĭaitlyn Jenner, formally known as Bruce Jenner, and her public transition has created a safe haven for young children who are confused about who they really are. In 2015, many have made it easier to refute these sexist ideas with the thought that items of clothing, genres of music or even accessories that are generally created for a certain gender, can be used by the other. 1.Society has always had keen a way of placing people in a box making it harder for one to be who they really are. Gender roles and gender specifics have always been an issue in America and gradually has gotten worse. And of course, Kurt Cobain was also known for his infamous floral dress.Īs we continue to break boundaries, let’s appreciate the male style icons-past and present-who have contributed to this movement by displaying their best androgynous looks. ![]() Freddie Mercury redefined masculinity with his gender-defying outfits. ‘Purple Rain’ singer Prince had many groundbreaking androgynous looks. Long before the birth of today’s “woke” generation, English rockstar David Bowie wore a long velvet dress on his album cover for The Man Who Sold The World. It would be foolish to forget those before us who have paved the way for a more inclusive society. Over the past decades, we’ve made tremendous strides by dismantling social stigmas and encouraging more self-expression. As fashion continues to progress, we might eventually see fashion brands remove menswear and womenswear categories to be more inclusive of those who don’t identify with gender as a social construct. We’re starting to witness brands such as Jacquemus and Gucci blur the lines between traditional masculinity and feminity on the runway. Hopefully, this will encourage authentic self-expression through fashion regardless of one’s gender identity.Īs fashion trends start to change, fashion brands have to keep up to stay relevant. This has sparked a wave of celebrities who are bolder with their fashion choices, at red carpet events as well as on the streets. Fortunately, we’re now seeing a shift in fashion due to changes in societal attitudes towards gender. ![]() For the longest time, clothing were strictly categorised along the lines of men and women, restricting those who didn’t identify with gender norms. Fashion knows no boundaries, and that’s just how we like it. ![]()
